History
General Millwork Supply, Inc. (GMS,Inc.) is family owned & operated by Thomas & Wendy Duran, located in the heart of North County, San Marcos, California. After moving to North County from their native state Connecticut, they opened their business in December of 1991 when small businesses were struggling to stay alive in a depressive economy. The company was established during tough economic times at their one location and has weathered three recessionary periods; the last one being the toughest of the three. They are “Celebrating 33 Years in Business” and attribute their success by planning and staying inside the lines on the guiding principles of the company’s core values.

It is very gratifying to Tom & Wendy that they made it through another recession since the building & remodeling industry was hit so hard for years, while many other competitors had to close their doors. Sustaining their business is definitely something the owners, Tom and Wendy are thankful for! 

Meet the Business Owners
The Duran’s moved from the East Coast to the West Coast more than 33 years ago.
After moving to the North County Tom had wanted to take the experience he had built in the window and door industry since getting out of college in 1977 and perhaps start his own company. He had run a branch location of a large lumber company which specialized in windows and doors on the East Coast and was confident that he learned enough from his mentors to run a successful business.

Tom has over forty years of experience in the building industry and likewise with our sales representative on staff. He needed some time to learn the local marketplace and his West Coast customers. He then put together a business plan, a mission statement and developed a marketing strategy while looking for locations to start his own business. When he started General Millwork in 1991, he pulled on his past experiences to shape how he would present his company to professionals in his area.  He learned well from people who knew how to run a business and used much of that expertise to benefit his business today.

Wendy had the background education in Graphic Design, Business & Marketing with much experience in Customer Service making her a great complement to team up with her husband. They have been working side by side ever since.

Today, GMS, Inc. has successfully grown and is one of the largest showrooms in San Diego County. Our success is a direct attribute to hard work and strong commitment to excellence through teamwork.
